Les matières à privilégier en hiver

Materials to favor in winter

Winter is in full swing, the outside temperature is around 0° and you no longer know how to dress? By piling on layers (undershirt, shirt, sweater #1, sweater #2, down jacket, coat, scarf, etc.) has your style taken a serious hit? You no longer know how to dress when it's cold?

Today we're going to discuss the reflexes to adopt when winter rears its ugly head.

Winter offers a multitude of possibilities in terms of looks. To avoid freezing in the slightest gust of wind, the most important thing is clearly to choose suitable materials.

By default, you should always avoid synthetic materials. Note: I'm not talking about technical materials specific to sportswear.

Out with polyester which retains heat and makes you sweat profusely , not to mention the smell your body gives off when it comes into contact with it (respect people and above all: respect yourself!)

Natural materials allow air to pass through more easily thanks to their weave. They therefore adapt better to temperature differences.

To find your way around during the winter period, you can focus on the following 3 materials:

Material No. 1: Cotton

A famous plant fiber, it is THE excellent material to wear all year round. It adapts to temperature variations . Summer and winter. Almost magical.

This plant fiber is known for:

  • Being naturally breathable and absorbent : this is why it is used for bath towels.
  • Have a strong insulating power : it helps keep you cool on hot summer days and warm in the middle of winter.
  • Withstand high temperatures : it is one of the only materials that can be boiled (therefore very easy to maintain) and can be ironed with a very hot iron.

Available in a multitude of different textures and weaves, it is the material that best suits all seasons, regardless of the style you are looking to adopt, from the most casual to the most dressy !

In winter, we tend to choose thick cotton or flannel (when the cotton is brushed and very soft) to counter the cold winds while accentuating the thermoregulating effect.

Material No. 2: Wool

As for wool, no surprise: it's the go-to material for winter!

Wool is:

  • hypoallergenic : our skin cannot be allergic to it and tolerates it very well (the feeling of irritation can come from the mechanical friction of thick, untreated wool).
  • very strong : wool can stretch a third of its length without breaking (but it is not elastic, so it does not return to its original shape).
  • Very clean : it doesn't retain odors or dust. A little airing, a quick brush and hey presto, like new!

Of course, if your pasta Bolognese gets on your pants, it will stain, but a little soap and water will be enough to remove all traces.

Wool, flannel or boiled wool... a multitude of treatments are available to you to allow you to create very different styles that suit you even when it's cold.

It's up to you to find yours!

Material No. 3: Cashmere

Cashmere was long considered a luxurious but fragile fabric, with a price tag that quickly became unattainable. Those days are over; new brands have taken on cashmere and made it accessible. Today, it's a staple in every wardrobe.

Even for small budgets!

Its properties can be summarized in several points:

  • It naturally regulates humidity and has great insulating properties : perfect for uncertain days, between gusts of wind and unexpected rain.
  • It is warmer and lighter than wool : ideal if you don't like wearing thick sweaters.
  • It is extremely soft against the skin and protects against temperatures down to -30°C , in case you are planning to move to Lapland soon.

1 thread, 2 threads, 4 threads... you can quickly get lost.

But don't be fooled, it's not a guarantee of quality but simply the thickness of the fabric , the choice is yours!

In conclusion, there is no secret, summer or winter, start from the principle that choosing natural materials is always THE right choice.
