Jeans Bruts et Jean Brut Selvedge, quelles différences ?

Raw Jeans and Raw Selvedge Jeans, what are the differences?

We're not telling you anything new, jeans are a staple in our wardrobes: each of us owns at least one, and everyone wears them. In a previous article, we talked about Raw Selvedge Jeans. Some of you have probably already heard this name, some don't really know what it means. So, since the release of our Raw Selvedge Jeans, many of you have been asking yourself the question: What's the difference between the two models? Why aren't they the same price?

“Selvedge” and “Brut” are two different terms:

  • The term "Selvedge" refers to the way the material has been woven and its finishing,
  • The term “Raw” refers to the state of the material and the treatment of the jeans during production.

Why choose a Selvedge?

Selvedge fabric, to put it simply, is a bit like the Ferrari of denim fabrics. Beyond its reputation, it's also its characteristics that make selvedge fabric so high-quality. Its most well-known feature? Its edges don't fray thanks to a reinforced border. This is where its name comes from: selvedge is a contraction of self-finished edge.

Toile Selvedge

But that's not the only advantage of selvedge. Indeed, this fabric is also known for its unique aging and unique reflections. The more you wear your selvedge jeans, the more the patina will transform them into a unique piece.

Another special feature is that the Selvedge fabric is woven on old looms, very tightly, which gives it extreme longevity, and this rigidity to the touch and the first wears. The only small downside is that the comfort at the time of purchase is not necessarily there, which is why, in order to ensure maximum comfort, we have decided to add a small percentage of elastane!

Tissage Candiani

In short, our Raw Selvedge Jeans are highly durable. Our fabric comes from the Italian house of Candiani, renowned for their denim, their love of blue, and their eco-responsibility.

The price difference between our Raw Selvedge Jeans and our "non-Selvedge" Raw Jeans is explained by a different weave of the fabric and by the number of rolls used to make a Selvedge Jean. Indeed, the rolls of Selvedge canvas, coming out of old looms, are smaller (60cm wide), than the rolls of other non-Selvedge canvas, woven on modern looms, which are generally between 120 and 150cm wide. Therefore, more rolls are needed to make Selvedge Jeans.

Why choose raw jeans?

Jean Brut Bleu

All our jeans, selvedge or not, are raw jeans. This means that the fabric from which the jeans are made has not been treated after production, so it is in its raw, natural state. Some brands offer jeans that undergo artificial treatments and patinas to modify their appearance and color (faded, etc.)

We have chosen to offer you only Raw Jeans, because we believe it is more interesting to own jeans that will fade over time and become unique. Furthermore, raw canvas, which has not been manipulated, is more durable. For our Raw Selvedge Jeans, as for our Raw Jeans, we choose a unique cut: the semi-slim. The semi-slim cut is indeed the most versatile and easy to wear: it slims the leg, without being too tight, and allows you to wear any type of shoe.

Jean Brut Bleu

In both cases, quality and durability are the order of the day: rivets to reinforce the pockets, taped seams, LePantalon floral patterned pocket fabric, durable and pleasantly soft when you put your hands in it. All our jeans are made in our workshop in Portugal. Our Raw Jeans are available in three colors: blue, gray, and black. The little extra detail? The taped seams of the hems with the LePantalon floral pattern!
